Ex-guv told: Abandon wish of becoming priest again

SUSPENDED Catholic priest and former Pampanga governor Eduardo Panlilio was advised to let go of his wish to return to Church service, instead of insisting on returning to priesthood.
Panlilio should just learn to embrace his new “calling”, which is politics, said former Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz.
“It would be very hard for him to go back to active priestly ministry,” said Cruz.
The retired prelate also said it would be best for Panlilio to just accept any government post he deemed he could serve well and is offered to him by the administration.
“In fact, I think he should not only consider but he should accept, if any worthy position is offered to him,” opined Cruz.
Panlilio took a leave from performing priesthood when he ran as an independent and won for governor of Pampanga back in the 2007 elections.
Pampanga Archbishop Paciano Aniceto also suspended him from his pastoral duties because he ran for a government post.
In 2009, Aniceto sent a letter to Vatican calling for the dispensation from priesthood of Panlilio, although it has yet to be approved by the Holy See.
Panlilio ran for re-election as Pampanga governor in 2010 under the Liberal Party (LP) but eventually lost to incumbent Governor Lilia Pineda.
He is now one of those rumored as among the losing LP candidates who are likely to be appointed by President Benigno Aquino III now that the one-year ban has lapsed.
However, some reports indicated that during a recent LP meeting, Panlilio supposedly reiterated that he will just be happy to go back to serving the Church.
