Evacuees start to head home

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Village officials on Saturday have allowed the thousand of evacuees who were displaced by the onslaught of southwest monsoon rain to return to their homes as the weather in the city improved.

City Administrator Engr. Fernando Limbitco said clearances from the village chiefs of about 15 affected barangays was necessary to ensure the safety of evacuees when they return to their homes.

“The barangay captains are the best authorities who can assess the situations in their respective villages and know when their constituents can return home,” he said.

“The situation is near normal and we have done additional preparations with the report of two new low pressure areas that may enter the country,” he further said.

Limbitco said relief goods and essentials at the evacuation centers are sufficient and could last for two to three days, in case of prolonged stay of the evacuees, although such is discouraged by city officials as classes in public schools, serving as evacuation centers, will resume on Tuesday.

A total of 1,385 families have been evacuated to San Agustin Elementary School, San Isidro Elementary School, Quebiawan Elementary School, Sindalan Elementary School, Sindalan High School, Calulut Elementary School, Saguin Elementary School, Baliti Elementary School, Panipuan Elementary School, Panipuan High School, Telabastagan Elementary School, Del Rosario Elementary School, Maimpis Elementary School, Alasas Elementary School, and De La Paz Norte Elementary School.

As this developed, Mayor Edwin Santiago said the City Government is planning to construct a permanent evacuation center north of San Fernando.

“We are set to have a sizeable evacuation center north of the city where it is flood-free and safe. This will allow our public schools to operate normally and not be hindered by the presence of evacuees. We really want to put things under control during calamities or abnormal situations,” he said.
