Drug suspect’s relatives attempt to bribe cop

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A police officer here was offered P45,000 by the relatives of a suspected gun and illegal drugs runner in exchange for not pursuing charges against them.

Inspector John Pineda, station commander of the community police assistance center (Compac) 4 in this city, said the money was offered to him by Emelda Gundam, 60, and Michael Gundam, 36.

The older Gundam is the mother of Walfredo Gundam, 27, who was arrested on Thursday for illegal possession of firearms and violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Michael was Gundam’s cousin.

Pineda said the two insisted on offering the money to him in favor of dropping the charges against Walfredo. He said Michael even counted the money and placed them above his office table.

After their attempts to bribe him, Pineda said the two were arrested for charges of corrupting public officials.

Walfredo, along with Jericho Celso, 19, both natives of Barangay Pulung Maragul, Angeles City, were arrested after police manning an anti-criminality checkpoint in Barangay Telebastagan saw a .38 caliber pistol tucked in his waist.

The suspects were reportedly riding a motorcycle.

Pineda said that when the two were asked to bring out their personal belongings at the police station, police found shabu in their possession.

Gundam had 10 sachets of suspected shabu in his pocket while Celso had four sachets. The 14 sachets of shabu had an estimated street value of P100,000. (Charlene Cayabyab)
