Damaged dikes threaten residents

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Families in several towns in the Fourth District have expressed fear that the dikes and slope protections in their areas might collapse.
The dikes were heavily damaged due to the water’s strong current during the onslaught of Typhoon Pedring.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) earlier declared that the Arnedo Dike has breached, resulting to the flooding of several villages in the said district.
In Arayat town, meanwhile, local officials are closely monitoring the Guemasan Dike, which has already scoured.
The said dike’s scouring endangers neighboring towns, including Sta. Ana, Candaba, San Luis, Mexico and even the City of San Fernando, earlier reports said.
“Halos isang metro na lang ay lilipat na sa barangay ang tubig mula sa ilog,” Jhun Sigua, a resident here stated.
In Candaba town, a portion of the Arnedo Dike in Barangay Mandasig is currently being bombarded by strong current from the upstream.
Fourth District Congresswoman Anna York Bondoc earlier stated that the dike in Mandasig is one of the biggest ongoing flood control projects in the district.
She also claimed that the same costs P58 million.
In Masantol, Mayor Peter Flores reported that almost a half-kilometer of the Arnedo Dike in the portion of Barangay Palimpe has scoured the other day, resulting to the overflowing of the Pampanga River and inundating several villages.
In San Luis town, various damages of the Arnedo dike were seen at the Sta. Catalina and San Sebastian portions.
Meanwhile, in Sta. Ana town, continuous heavy rains have threatened anew the Sta. Ana-Magalang provincial road along the portions of Barangays San Roque and San Agustin, as the Matubig creek traversing these villages connecting to the Abacan River overflowed.
Local officials said the provincial road is not passable to heavy and light vehicles.
Meanwhile, Mexico Mayor Teddy Tumang clarified on Thursday that no dike has breached and that floodwaters coming from his town that headed downstream was a result of overspill of protective barrier.
“There was no breaching of the San Lorenzo Dike. The dike over-spilled because it cannot contain the huge volume of water coming from the upstream. There is no need to be alarmed as the situation is manageable,” Tumang told Sun.Star Pampanga. (Jovi de Leon)
