Cortez: Bread of Life
May 12, 2011
BEFORE God brought out his chosen people from Egypt to start their journey to the Promised Land, he instructed them to celebrate the Passover. As recorded in the book of Exodus, they were to kill a lamb or a goat, sprinkle their doorposts with the blood of the animal, and eat the roasted meat with bitter herbs and with bread without yeast.
When the Lord moves around that night to take the life of every first born male in Egypt as a punishment for the people’s sins, he will pass over any house with blood on its doorposts and will not harm its occupants.
Never did the Israelites know then that the Passover lamb foreshadowed the sacrificial death of Jesus. He was the lamb without defect or blemish, offered as atonement for all the sins man could ever incur or imagine. When God the Father sees Jesus in our hearts, he will pass over us, sparing us from all the punishment we deserve to bear for the sins we have committed.
In their journey, God fed his people with manna — the bread that fell from heaven. This manna sustained their bodies and gave them strength to withstand the physical demands of their travel.
On the Last Supper, Jesus once again offered his apostles bread. After giving thanks and praise, he said, “Take this all of you and eat it. This is my body.” He then took the cup of wine, gave thanks and said, “This is my blood which seals God’s covenant, my blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Then he added, “Do this in memory of me.”
Jesus thus offered his body as the bread of life. In the 6th chapter of John, he said, “If you do not eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will not have life within you. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. This, then, is the bread that comes down from heaven; it is not like the bread that your ancestors ate, but then later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.”
If there is therefore any message that is highlighted in today’s gospel, it is the recognition, appreciation and living up of the Eucharist as God’s priceless gift to humanity. In the Eucharist, we receive sacramentally the body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His body and blood unite us with him, and not only sustains us in our temporal lives here on earth, but also leads us to our eternal life in heaven.
In the Eucharist, we receive our Savior, Redeemer, Healer, Provider, Protector, Best Friend, Lord and King. And so the next time we receive Holy Communion, may we not do it out of habit or routine but in awe, reverence and gratitude that our Creator and the Creator of everything seen and unseen comes to our person, unworthy as we may be. Thus, taking inspiration from the centurion who invoked Jesus’ healing for his servant, may we humbly say before receiving the sacred host, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.”
