Cops search Soc’s house
Friday, December 17, 2010
AUTHORITIES found two small plastic sachets with traces of white powder and some drug paraphernalia during a three-hour search on an uphill dwelling place called the house of prayer of Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez in Barangay Candulawan yesterday afternoon.
Talisay City policemen, led by Supt. Henry Biñas, were looking for a handgun that Fernandez’s adopted son, Joavan, allegedly used to fire at a clubhouse store attendant of Vista Grande, an upscale subdivision in Talisay City, when they found the illegal items.
Lawmen secured a search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 10 Judge Soliver Peras in Cebu City.
Raymond Paran, 19, got the scare of his life when Joavan shot at him for not immediately taking his order of two litro bottles of softdrink around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.
Paran was taking his lunch when Joavan and his two female companions arrived.
“Unsa man ka, pa massacre ka?” Paran quoted Joavan as threatening him after he handed over the softdrink order to the Talisay mayor’s son.
Joavan allegedly pulled out a handgun, believed to be a .45 pistol, and fired a shot.
Paran said Joavan has been allowed to get items from the store, commonly owned by the Vista Grande homeowners association. Mayor Fernandez pay for the items every other day.
Paran said Joavan did not aim the gun at him but fired it towards the side, away form his direction.
Joavan left aboard a red KIA Sportage with licensed plate JCV 768 and went back to the house of prayer, about half a kilometer away from the clubhouse.
Although a huge statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and big bold letters that read Balay sa Pag-ampo with a Bible verse of Jeremias 33:3 are visibly seen on the frontage, the so called house of prayer does not show any indication of being a “holy” place.
It has become an auto-machine shop complete with car repair gadgets. Used paint containers, old tarpaulins, junk materials and several sacks of empty softdrink and beer bottles have been left in disarray.
The shooting incident alarmed the Vista Grande homeowners that they immediately called up the Talisay City police station for help.
Paran got the full support of the homeowners association.
Joavan was nowhere in sight when responding policemen arrived at the house of prayer.
Reports said he fled through the backdoor, leaving behind four persons, two of them his female friends .
Fernando de Guzman, a motorcycle-for-hire (habal-habal) driver, reportedly saw Joavan, who had his shirt slung over his shoulder, in Sitio Cabancalan, Bulacao Cebu City looking for a ride home past 3 p.m.
De Guzman said Joavan even asked for a taxi, apparently to avoid being seen by policemen, to no avail.
De Guzman said he had to bring Joavan to his house in Mansueto Village, Barangay Bulacao, Talisay City.
He noticed that Joavan bore scratch marks on his back and arms that were probably caused by running through the bushes as he was fleeing downhill.
Under Biñas’ supervision, Espina and PO1 Rosauro Pasumala jointly conducted the search, exploring every nook and cranny of the house.
Paran had applied for the search warrant on the house of prayer after the threat he got from Joavan.
The search was witnessed by Joavan’s two young female friends and tanods.
After a three-hour search on the house and two parked vehicles—the red KIA Sportage and a Honda Civic (YEH 323) —PO3 Mikie Espina found drug paraphernalia such as pieces of tin foil, tissue, a masking tape, a lighter and an improvised tooter, inside the room allegedly occupied by Joavan.
Police also seized two small sachets containing small amount of white crystalline powder believed to be shabu. The sachets will be sent to the PNP Crime Laboratory in Cebu City.
Biñas said they will study the filing of charges of robbery against Joavan for not paying the softdrinks, grave threat and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia.
At least three people reportedly witnessed Joavan firing his gun at Paran.
