City ready for Mount Pinatubo commemoration

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The City Government of San Fernando and its private sector partners have finalized events commemorating the 20th year of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption during a meeting at Heroes Hall.
Levy P. Laus, chief executive officer of Laus Group of Companies and chairman of the executive committee, said they have identified three events hailing the Kapampangans’ resiliency: the cycling caravan, the fun run and the thanksgiving banquet.
“The cycling caravan will happen on June 4 and the fun run on June 11. Those projects will cover parts of Pampanga. The main event or highlight of the celebration will be on June 15, the day itself, where we will start the celebration with interfaith services at 5 p.m.,” he said.
The interfaith services will be followed by the thanksgiving banquet, which is expected to be attended by leaders from the city and province, Laus added.
He also said that the thanksgiving banquet will feature a cultural presentation, which will showcase the events from the time Mt. Pinatubo erupted to the point where Kapampangans all over united to emerge victorious in progress.
Laus disclosed that some planned events may not push through for the first-ever celebration, like the Mt. Pinatubo monument and the “Mt. Pinatubo Akyatan” because of some technicalities, although options have been presented.
“Those may not happen yet but we [Provincial Government and City Government] are not giving up and eventually, we would put this into fruition. But the time table has been completely altered given some delays and challenges we are facing at the moment,” he said.
An option for “Akyatan,” he said during the meeting, will be to launch the trail leading to Mt. Pinatubo’s crater, without the actual trek. “It will be launched together with a photo exhibit. But we know that Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as well as Governor Lilia Pineda is on top of things.”
Meanwhile, businessman Alfrito Mah revealed that the June 4 cycling caravan will be participated in by some 1,200 bikers from all over the province.
Registration will begin at 5 a.m. at the starting line in front of Carworld along Jose Abad Santos Avenue, he said, adding it will be a 66-kilometer caravan from the point of Ford Pampanga, moving to Angeles City, Porac, Sta. Rita, Guagua, Bacolor and then San Fernando, where the finish line will be at Heroes Park.
“The June 11 fun run, meantime, will have a select group of about 200 runners for the 10-kilometer run, which will start at Guagua then to Cabalantian [Bacolor] and finish here at Heroes Park,” he said.
For his part, Willie Rivera said all is set too for the 20th Pinatubo Memorial Thanksgiving Banquet, including the interfaith service and the cultural presentation directed by Peter De Vera.
Some 1,000 guests are expected and if plans push through, President Benigno Aquino III will race the affair.
