City places ‘portalets’ in tricycle, jeepney terminals
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — City officials have started positioning blue portable toilets (portalets) in jeepney and tricycle terminals on Monday as part of its sanitation project.
Engineer Ferdinand Caylao, city administrator, said the putting up of portalets in crowded areas is an initiative of the City Government.
This initiative is under the Accelerating City-to-City Exchange for Sustainable Sanitation (Access) Sanitation Program in cooperation with the European Union, wherein a city should start programs and initiatives for sustainable development,” Caylao said.
On February, the city has been chosen as one of the pilot areas of Access Sanitation, which is funded by the European Union, along with other cities in India and Indonesia.
“If our portalet project will pass the standards of the European Union, they will support our program and provide us 10,000 European dollars,” Caylao said.
He said they will initially put up five portalets across the city to test their viability and acceptability to the public.
The body waste that will be accumulated by the portalets will be collected by the city’s agricultural department, which will later treat it to be used as fertilizer.
Caylao said the portalets will also be placed in Barangay San Pedro Cutud on Good Friday for local and foreign tourists who will witness the crucifixion rites. (Charlene Cayabyab)
