Castilla-La Mancha has well and truly joined the other Spanish wine-producing regions in re-defining its stature as a quality wine region

Castilla La Mancha Wine

Castilla-La Mancha, known as Castile-La Mancha in English, is an autonomous community (Autonomía de la Comunidad de Castilla–La Mancha) of Spain which occupies the vast expanse of the central Iberian plateau. For individual description of each DO within the province, please see the table below.

In wine-growing terms, the region is quantitatively most significant with almost half of the country’s grapes being grown here, one of the reasons why it was traditionally known as a bulk-wine zone. But since 1986 when Spain joined the European Union, a literal wine revolution has transformed Castilla-La Mancha’s image with both large wine companies and single estates employing modern winemaking technologies mixed with judicious selection of grape varieties and barrel maturation techniques. Nevertheless, a large proportion of the annual production still goes into the inexpensive mass-produced sector, including for distillation purposes (Spanish brandy).

The climate here is most extreme with a strong continental influence, demonstrated by the marked variation in the seasonal temperatures. The mercury often rises above 104°F (40°C) during summers while the long and cold winters see temperatures drop below 32°F (0°C). The altitudes between 1,650 ft (500 m) and 2,300 ft (700 m) where the vineyards lie do not bring any respite from these conditions as the vines have to survive the searing heat and a lack of moisture during the growing season. All these mean that only those vines tolerant of these harsh conditions were traditionally planted in the region. Airén tops this list and is still the most planted variety here. Since it is not one of the most sought after varieties, many conscientious producers have broadened their portfolio with increased plantations of varieties such as Cencibel (local name for Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon, GarnachaGarnacha Tintorera, Monastrell, Syrah and Bobal. Most of these grapes are used for the production of red blends suited for barrel maturation although varietal wines are also being increasingly produced.

In spite of all the adverse environmental conditions and traditional practices, Castilla-La Mancha has well and truly joined the other Spanish wine-producing regions in re-defining its stature as a quality wine region while holding on to its position as the largest contributor to the nation’s production.
