During a Vignerons Indépendant meeting in Bordeaux last Friday, Alain Vironneau, President of the wines of Bordeaux interpforfessional body (CIVB) gave a gloomy assessment for wine: “For three months, a slight recovery in our export sales begins after one catastrophic year 2009. Overall, our wine exports have declined by 14% by volume and 23% in value. (…) The slight shudder noted in recent months does not compensate for our losses, far from it. ”
In 2009, wine sales of Bordeaux wines in France and abroad, accounted for 4.96 million hectoliters, a figure down 12% compared to 2008 for a turnover of 3.37 billion ‘euros.
The French wine market accounted for 3.37 million hl (-10% compared to 2009) or 68% of total sales volume. 44% of volumes are sold through mass distribution (1.49 million hl), 43% (1.45 million hl) pass through the traditional channels and direct wine sales and 13% (0.44 million hl) wine are sold in hard discount.
On the wine export front, the situation of Bordeaux “is not worse than other wine producing regions” said Alain Vironneau before recalling that international trade of wine fell by 90 million hl to 70 hl in one year and bringing this down to the minus 14% recorded in Bordeaux: “These 20 million hectoliters lost somehow summarize the situation of the global wine economy.
Export wine sales represent just under 30% of sales of Bordeaux wines (1.54 million hl), with more than 56% (864,000 hl) sold to countries within the European Union, where sales of Bordeaux wines regress by 19% by volume and 25% in value to 598 million euros. The losses in the United Kingdom take the average down (-25% to 197 000 hl) because the strong euro has played against the wines of Bordeaux. However, the UK remains the top destination in value (233 million euros). The key markets of the euro area are also experiencing significant declines, especially in Belgium (- 14% to 0.23 million hl) and Germany, remaining the first destination in volume, which fell by 14% to 252 000 hl for 119 million euros).
Outside the EU area, shipments of wine from Bordeaux represented 684,000 hl (-7%) for a turnover of 697 million euros (-22%). The wine exports to China (+ 97% up to 137 000 hl) exceeded for the first time those to the United States (- 27% down to 0.12 million hl).
