Bordeaux 2009 – the American market wants wines with value they can rely on (June 15, 2010)

Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site.  We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.

The prices of Bordeaux 2009 wine could risk provoking the rejection of the wines most prized by American connoisseurs. The owner of Sherry Lehman in New York, Chris Adams said that the wine futures campaign would “uneven”, despite the real interest in the 2009 vintage. He is betting on wines that are less well-known but with good press, which have seen significant sales: “But my early feeling is that things are getting more dangerous, mostly because there are some chateaux that I would like to offer this year, but the way the wine pricing is heading, I might be passing.”

For Philippe Larché, at Vintex, Bordeaux, “the financial crisis is still with us and that is the problem, even if the strengthening dollar will help the American wine market. And even if people are complaining, many end up buying the wine because they know it is a great vintage.”

American professional opinion is unanimous: yes, the 2009 vintage is exceptional, but they have to bank on discoveries, unknown gems that will give consumers the feeling they are drinking more than just a big name wine. The market release of Château Gruaud Larose and Giscours by wine importer Calvert Woodley has seen disappointing returns due to the too heavy increase in price with respect to their reputation: “there is not much demand for Gruaud Larose at $60 (up 68% on 08) and almost nothing for Giscours (up 43% on 2008)”, says co-owner Ed Sands.

However the representative of a Bordeaux wine estate preferring to remain anonymous told decanter.com by email: “The US wine market is no longer into Bordeaux wines and we are perceived as too expensive, even though the dollar is now higher and many California wines or Italian Super Tuscans cost more than us. It is all about perception.

A few idiotic chateau owners only see Asia and the Chinese buyers. They forget their core markets. I think lots of people in Bordeaux are too greedy, and that greed will eventually blow up in their faces.”
