Bizman not happy with conduct of campaign, politicians
A BUSINESSMAN decried on Friday the low level of maturity of how national and local candidates are conducting their campaigns, stressing the need for a more professional conduct among politicians and campaign handlers.
“It is very disappointing. The kind of campaigns may have become more savvy and advanced because of technology, but the way people campaign and the way they conduct themselves is still the same,” Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) Vice Chairman Rene Romero said, stressing that patronage politics, dynasties, bad taste in campaign propaganda and politicians bereft with moral and academic qualifications still plague the roster of candidates.
“Not all political families are bad, there are those who really love their localities and serve them honestly, but these are very, very rare,” Romero said.
Romero said one thing that bothers him is the fact that dynasties have more pronounced in the local campaigns.
He said that the level of the campaign and the roster of politicians to choose from do little to uplift the political maturity of voters in the Philippines.
He said that there is really a need to make voters more informed of the right qualities they need to look for in a politician.
He said that the community plays a significant role in uplifting the kind of campaign and elections we have through the strict implementation of election laws and regulations and not voting for politicians who are unfit to serve in public office.
Businessmen, according to Romero, are concerned about the qualities of future leaders of the country.
He lamented that many foreign investors are apprehensive in putting up their businesses in the country because of alleged greedy and corrupt officials, as well as due to the country’s political instability.
Romero said that the current campaign still has a good effect in the country in terms of economic spending as politicians and parties spend to advance their political support.
The sheer amount of money spent in the current election is expected to boost the country’s economy for the first two quarters at the most and would have a ripple effect on small enterprises that cater to election collateral and supplies.
Romero also called on sectors to be vigilant this coming election to ensure the peaceful conduct of May 2013 polls.
