Balibago water ‘not potable’

Danilo Consumido, spokesperson of Sabak, said water samples collected from BWSI lines were examined by the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) and were tested positive of harmful elements.

“Sabak submitted three samples of water taken from Pulung Maragul, a service area of BWSI to LWUA and the tests revealed that the water is not potable as it failed in three parameters of the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW), specifically on odor, color and iron content,” Consumido said.

“Based on the parameters of PNSDW, the allowable parameter for the water color is 10 units and 1.0 mg/L for the iron content, but the BWSI water color ranged from 75 to 230 units and the iron content is 3 mg/L which exceeds the normal level,” he said.

“We know that BWSI will question our findings, but we challenge them to let the LWUA, the Department of Health (DOH) and the University of the Philippines do the tests all over again using samples collected from various points of the service areas, but with our presence. We also volunteer to accompany them deliver the samples for testing to avoid switching of the samples along the way,” he said.

The officials of BWSI, however, insisted that their water supply is safe and potable.

“Our water is potable. We are required by National Water Resources Board (NWRB) to subject our water to a monthly bacteriological and annual physical and chemical tests,” the BWSI management said.

BWSI added that Sabak “has again chosen to air their grievances against our company in the media rather than to talk to us face to face.”

“We are fully compliant to this requirement and we have all the reports to prove it. These tests are conducted by a third party DOH-accredited laboratory after a joint sampling together with representatives from BWSI and DOH. Our water consistently passed these tests,” BWSI stated.

The water firm said it cannot reply to the LWUA test issue because Sabak did not furnish them a copy of the result.

The BWSI management requested for another testing to be conducted jointly by an independent laboratory with the water collection witnessed by leaders of Sabak, representatives of DOH and the Mayor’s office, as well as representatives of BWSI in order to put the issue to rest.

“Our company is continuously focused on improving the water supply and water quality we provide our consumers. We invest millions every year on programs for improvement. NWRB, as our regulatory agency, can attest to this and so can our customers,” the water system stressed.

The franchise of BWSI expired last June 22, and the management is currently negotiating for an extension.

The consumer group sent a letter to Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan and asked for intercession on the issue, but BWSI officials recently met with the mayor for proper coordination and resolution of the case.
