Arroyo ‘open’ to seeking treatment abroad

AFTER developing “some type of bone mineral disorder” due to her “unique” medical condition, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is now considering getting treatment abroad.
“She’s open to it. It’s still being considered due to her bone mineral disorder and hypoparathyroidism. Bone mineral disorder is a very rare disease with very few specialists. We don’t have (doctors specializing on her condition) here in the Philippines,” Elena Bautista-Horn, Arroyo’s spokesperson, said in a text message.
Horn added that even Arroyo’s medicine have to be imported from the United States because it is not available in the Philippines.
Doctors who conducted the three cervical spine surgeries on Arroyo said in a medical bulletin issued Wednesday that the former President had “remarkable improvements of her neurologic status”.
Arroyo, now a Pampanga congresswoman, went to the hospital for a post-operative follow-up consultation Tuesday morning.
According to Mario Ver, Arroyo’s orthopedic surgeon, the former President is no longer suffering from neck pain and shooting pain through arms and hands. She also feels no more weakness or numbness in her upper extremities, which she complained before her third surgery last August.
“The halo vest was removed three weeks ago, and has now been downgraded or reduced to a less rigid balance. She is currently encouraged to do some rotational head and neck movement,” the medical bulletin issued Wednesday stated.
Arroyo underwent her first cervical spine surgery last July 29, which was followed with two more surgeries in August after doctors found out that the former President had hypoparathyroidism which aggravated her condition.
According to Horn, Arroyo’s doctors did not recommend treatment abroad after conducting a check-up on the former President this week.
“No, (they did not recommend) but they told us there are no bone mineral disorder specialists in the country and very few in the world,” she added.
House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. earlier told reporters that the Pampanga congresswoman has sought approval of travels abroad to attend several conferences. The travel requests also indicated that Arroyo has scheduled a medical consultation from September 28 to October 6 in Munich, Germany.
Allies of the former President said she was hesitant to leave the country as her opponents may accuse her of evading the charges filed against her.
