Aquino: Priest’s killers will pay
Tuesday, October 18, 2011
MANILA (Updated) — President Benigno Aquino III vowed Tuesday to punish those involved in the killing of an Italian priest in North Cotabato province, saying “they will have to pay.”
The President ordered Tuesday the creation of a task group that will investigate the killing of Fr. Fausto Tentorio, who was shot 10 times inside the Mother of Perpetual Help Parish Church in Arakan town, North Cotabato, Monday morning.
“They will have to pay. That has been the direction of this administration from the start — you do the crime, you will be in jail,” Aquino said.
In response, Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Nicanor Bartolome ordered the creation of Special Investigation Task Group Fausto.
Chief Superintendent Lester Camba, PNP deputy chief for administration in Soccksargen, will head the task force.
“They have started gathering witnesses and, of course, physical evidence which will be used in the investigation and eventual litigation of the people who may be identified as the perpetrators of the murder of Fr. Fausto,” police spokesman Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz said.
He added that Camba met with local government officials “for a systemized investigation.”
Police are looking into Tentorio’s stance against mining as a motive to have him killed.
“We are not ruling out other motives. It’s too early to rule out possible motives,” Cruz said.
Camba, in a separate interview, said the task force will also look into death threats that Tentorio reportedly received.
“We will start from there,” he said.
Rev. Julio Mariani, director of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions’ (Pime) Euntes Mission Center in Zamboanga City, earlier revealed that Tentorio received unspecified death threats around seven years ago, but had not mentioned new threats when they last met in July.
He said Tentorio’s killing could have been related to his work defending the rights of indigenous people and helping them hold on to their ancestral land.
“It was a delicate mission because when you deal with the marginalized and the poor, you are bound to step on the toes of some people and this could have been the source of the problem of why he was killed,” Mariani added.
Kidapawan Bishop Romulo dela Cruz said the murder is likely connected to Tentorio’s activities against mining in the area.
“That is possible scenario or reason because Fr. Fausto was program director for the diocese of indigenous people. The program tackled Lumad and IP (indigenous peoples) rights and their problems with mining,” he said.
Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez seconded Cruz’s claim and urged the government to prohibit mining areas that strongly oppose mining.
Gutierrez also expressed his strong opposition to the destruction of mountains due to mining in North Cotabato, Sarangani, Davao del Sur, and Sultan Kudarat.
Mindanaoan Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, meanwhile, advised caution on attributing the murder to miners.
“I ask everyone not to point an accusing finger versus any ethnic group or sector of our society without any adequate proof as that would only exacerbate things,” he said.
Amnesty International Philippines also condemned Tentorio’s killing and reiterated its call for the creation of a presidential accountability commission to ensure diligent investigation and expedient prosecution of cases of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and torture.
The group said that unless impunity is broken, the killings will continue.
“If we want the killings to stop, our government officials must send a clear message that perpetrators of extrajudicial executions will be brought to justice. This means that in addition to condemnation of the crimes, there must be due diligence in police investigations, witnesses must be protected and the prosecutors must work with the police to ensure that justice will be served,” said Dr. Aurora Corazon A. Parong, director of Amnesty International Philippines.
The group also reiterated its call for President Aquino to rescind its plan of deploying civilian militias to augment security at private mining operations.
Such militias, including the Citizens’ Armed Forces Geographical Units, have a long record of human rights violations in the Philippines, said the group.
Pime regional superior Father Giovanni Re is hoping the murder would be solved soon.
“The usual appeal that we hear when things happen like that, please, please, try to do your best to bring justice to Fr. Fausto,” he said.
On Tuesday, the Philippine government also sent its condolences to the Rome-based Pime, the head office of the slain priest’s congregation.
“The Philippine Embassy in Rome assured Fr. Tentorio’s congregation that it is coordinating with authorities in the Philippines on the results of the investigation, particularly on the identity of the killer and the motive for the killing,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement.
The Embassy was also able to speak with Pime Assistant Superior General Fr. Mark Tardiff, who thanked Manila for efforts to investigate Tentorio’s killing.
Tentorio is the third Pime missionary to be killed in Mindanao after Fr. Tullio Favali (1985) and Salvatore Carzedda (1992).
Pime has more than 400 priests and 25 brothers who dedicate their lives to the mission among non-Christians in seventeen different countries. (VR/AMN/Jill Beltran/Jonathan de Santos/With PR/Sunnex)
