Aquino: Poll fraud probe to proceed even without Garci

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday said the government’s investigation into the alleged election irregularities in 2004 and 2007 will continue even without the help of former poll commissioner Virgilio Garcillano.
Several people have volunteered testimonies regarding poll fraud but the President said the Palace is taking everything “with a grain of salt”.
“Our investigation does not rely on them,” Aquino said in Filipino, referring to people who have emerged from hiding and who have expressed willingness to testify about the alleged massive election cheating that supposedly involved former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“Of course, we will not swallow everything that they were saying,” he added.
The Aquino administration is planning to file charges against officials involved in the alleged poll irregularities before the year ends.
“I will be greatly disappointed if we will not be able to file charges by the end of this year at least on the first track na hindi kasama si Garcillano,” he said.
The President made the statement after Garcillano turned its back against the administration denying that he sent feelers to Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Lllamas.
Garcillano is a key figure in the controversial “Hello Garci” poll fraud scandal, a wiretapped conversations between a man believed to be the former Comelec commissioner and a woman believed to be Arroyo.
As Malacanang believed that Garcillano is ready to give light on the poll fraud, he denied involvement in the issue.
“Everybody who is coming to us, you have take it with a grain of salt…One will come to you sending feelers but in the next few weeks he will take back what he has said…We should be careful,” Aquino said.
The President assured the public that government is building a strong case against those responsible for the supposed cheating.
“If some of our countrymen are getting impatient about this, we could not just file charges without strong basis,” he noted. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
