Aquino: Plot vs Arroyo a work of fiction

MANILA — President Benigno Aquino III said Thursday that the supposed plot to assassinate former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is a work of fiction.
The President denied the administration’s involvement in an operation called “Put the Little Girl to Sleep”, which aims to kill Arroyo.
“We don’t like to comment on work of fiction,” Aquino said, adding the government has no motive to harm Arroyo but wants her alive so that she can face the charges filed against her.
“What we want is conviction. You cannot convict if there is no accused,” Aquino said.
Arroyo’s spokesperson Elena-Bautista-Horn disclosed a supposed threat to the life of the former President, noting it would be dangerous for her to be transferred to a government facility.
Horn questioned the “insistence” of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Commission on Elections commissioner Sixto Brillantes to move Arroyo in a government hospital.
Arroyo is set to end her weeks-long confinement at the posh St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City after the Pasay City Regional Trial Court Branch 112 decided to transfer her at the state-run Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City.
The court, which is hearing the poll sabotage case, said Arroyo’s transfer is scheduled on Tuesday next week.
Horn said their camp has a reliable government source who could prove the plot, citing an article of columnist Ramon Tulfo that implicated Budget Secretary Florencio Abad.
Abad earlier denied allegations from the camp of Arroyo, calling it “absurd”. He added it was part of the Arroyo camp’s tactic to distract the public and for the former President to escape liability from charges.
Aquino challenged the camp of Arroyo to prove its claims and present its supposed sources.
Asked if Arroyo will be properly secured at VMMC, President Aquino answered, “Parang ang haba naman ng tanong mo sa work of fiction. Para na akong sira-ulo sumasagot pa d’yan. ‘Yung estado inatasan na mabantayan, at palagay ko mas maganda ang security na ipagkakaloob habang dito’y naka-detain siya rather than dating hindi siya naka-detain.”
He then refused to answer another question regarding the supposed plot against Arroyo.
“If anybody will ask again about something like that, I’m sorry, it’s really a waste of all of our time to really tackle a non-issue,” he said.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Thursday also expressed the same sentiment, saying the plot may have been the work of pranksters.
“It seems rather improbable. If I look at it closely, what would anybody gain by taking the life of the former President? What would be gained by anybody?” said Enrile.
He said the Aquino administration would be most foolish to even consider harming Arroyo. He gave the example of former President Ferdinand Marcos, who was believed to have had a hand in the death of then senator Benigno Aquino Jr.
“It caused the collapse of the Marcos regime,” he said, adding people may have thought up the plot to create that kind of havoc.
Enrile, a former defense minister, said the government should look into Horn’s allegation, including having the Arroyo spokesperson name her source.
“If this was the time of President Marcos and I am in charge of security, I’ll demand revelation, a disclosure of the source of information. That’s a very serious matter,” he said.
The Philippine National Police is already verifying the reported assassination plot.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima also challenged the Arroyo camp to expound on reports regarding the supposed plot to kill the former President.
“Where’s the information coming from? What are they insinuating? If they are saying that it (threat) comes from the government, it’s like at the height of paranoia already,” de Lima said.
Party-list group Akbayan also shrugged off Horn’s claim that there is a conspiracy to hurt the lawmaker who is currently accused of rigging the results of the 2007 senatorial elections.
“The supposed plot is obviously the figment of over fertile minds in her camp who have simply ran out of arguments to answer the very serious allegations of plunder, electoral sabotage, and human rights violations against her,” Akbayan spokesperson Risa Hontiveros said.
Akbayan, which sought for the inhibition of Chief Justice Renato Corona due to perceived partiality on Arroyo cases, likewise viewed the plot as fake due to lack of evidence.
Senator Gregorio Honasan II, meanwhile, said only destabilizers will have anything to gain from killing Representative Arroyo.
Honasan, chairman of the Senate committee on public order and a former military officer, said the Aquino administration had nothing to gain from the supposed plot.
He added Arroyo’s supporters and critics have taken to hurling statements and allegations against each other because the issue of Arroyo’s electoral sabotage case has been allowed to drag on.
He said controversy could have been avoided if the government had allowed Arroyo and her family to leave the country on November 15.
The Supreme Court already issued an injunction on a watchlist order from the Justice department that barred the Arroyos from leaving the country.
De Lima refused to heed the court, however, and kept Arroyo from boarding a flight to Singapore via Hong Kong.
An arrest warrant was issued by a Pasay City court later that week and has kept Arroyo from leaving ever since. “How come they were so quick to obey an order by a lower court?” Honasan said.
