Aquino accused of breaking promise to environmental groups
MANILA — Weak enforcement of environmental laws and endorsement of polluting fossil fuels as additional energy source mark the first two years of President Benigno Aquino III, an environmental group said on Sunday.
Greenpeace, which released the statement in time for the Earth Day celebration, said Aquino’s poor performance only showed how he has reneged on previous commitments to advance green goals.
To recall, then Senator Aquino stated that the country must shift to clean energy and technologies in response to the Green Electoral Initiative survey of Greenpeace and toxic watchdog Eco-Waste Coalition.
But for Von Hernandez, executive director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, the President’s commitments have either remained in the realm of rhetoric, or have been undermined by contradicting policies or actions of the National Government.
Recently, Greenpeace criticized the government for the approval of a 200-megawatt coal power project in Sarangani as part of the solution to the ongoing energy shortage in Mindanao.
Four similar projects are set to be implemented before the end of Aquino’s term by 2016 as environmentalists maintained that coal power can cause human illnesses, acid rain, and reduced agricultural yields.
On solid waste management, EcoWaste estimates that only less than 10 percent of the over 40,000 villages nationwide have implemented the mandatory waste segregation and materials recovery objectives of the Ecological Waste Management Act.
As for the RE law, Greenpeace said the government has “effectively stranded” its full implementation by allowing discussions on the feed-in-tariff (FIT) rates for renewable energy to drag on, while permits were being given to coal power plant proposals.
Aquino’s landmark policy on total log ban, meanwhile, lost its luster after exempting mining projects from the ban’s coverage.
“President Aquino still has four years in office. What does he want to leave behind as his legacy?” Hernandez said.

There are numerous opportunities for investments between US$100,000 and $500,000. These opportunities are especially attractive for semi-retirement lifestyles. The best, easiest and safest way to go about with this kind of investments is to deal with an existing business – a locator as business in Clark is called – so the investor is spared of the hassle of dealing with red-tape and bureaucracy that is always present in third-world countries. The existing locator has already cleared the path so to speak and even if it means asking for small premium for a partnership, it is very much worth the while of a new investor to take this route. Business opportunities depend largely on the skills, interests and experiences of the investors but there is a strong demand for more establishments in these areas: entertainment, shops, office space, construction and engineering services, restaurants and bars, transportation and travel assistance.
