Aetas lead protest vs massive land grabbing

MABALACAT CITY — Several Aeta groups from Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan, and Zambales led a rally against massive land grabbing of the tribe’s ancestral domain.
Edwin Danan, spokesman of the Central Luzon Ayta Association (CLAA) said the activity, which is a prelude to Ayta Day (Aeta Day) on August 11 and 12, was held in Tokwing Resettlement Center in Porac town Monday.
A group of Aetas rendered a ceremonial tribal dance against the exploitation and grabbing of land belonging to the tribe.
Farmers, students, youths, and church people attended the activity in support of the Aetas.
“Kaming mga katutubong Ayta sa Gitnang Luson ay inaapi at pinagsasamantalahan. Ang aming mga lupang katutubo ay pawang inaagaw at kami ay pinapalayas. Sa maraming lugar sa rehiyon, kami ay pinapalayas upang bigyan daan ang mapanirang pagmimina, konstruksyon ng mga dam at proyektong eko-turismo,” said Danan.
He said the government has initiated a massive militarization aimed at harassing and violating the rights of Aetas.
“Ang rehimeng US-Aquino ay hindi kumikilala sa aming karapatan sa lupang ninuno, kultura at sariling pagpapasya at kakampi ng mga malalaking dayuhan at lokal na korporasyon at panginoong maylupa,” Danan added.
The CLAA stated that the roots of abuses against Aetas are the guidelines and programs of the past and present administrations like the Indigenous
People’s Rights Act (IPRA), Mining Act of 1995, Indigenous People’s Master Plan (IPMP) at Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
“Ito ay pawang mga instrumento upang linlangin, agawin ang lupang katutubo at palayasin. Ang IPRA ay pamamaraan upang isapribado ang mga lupang komunal, samantalang ang Mining Act, dagdag ang Executive Order 95 ni Aquino ay nagbibigay daan sa malawakang pagmimina. Layon ng rehimeng US-Aquino na ibenta ang mga lupang ninuno sa mga dayuhan at lokal na negosyante sa pamamagitan ng IPMP at PPP,” the CLAA stated.
Several Aeta communities in Zambales were removed by the government and the tribesmen were transferred to various resettlement sites to give way to mining projects.
“Nais din kaming palayasin sa aming mga komunidad sa Porac dahil sa pagmimina. Ang proyektong Balog-balog dam naman ay nagpapalayas sa aming mga Ayta na matagal nang namumuhay sa Barangay Maamot sa bayan ng San Jose, Tarlac,” he said.
The dam is a priority project of President Benigno Aquino III under the PPP to assure sufficient and efficient power supply in the region and attract foreign investors.
“Ang National Greening Program ay upang bigyang daan umano ang reforestation program, ngunit sa katunayan, ito ay umagaw sa aming mga lupang katutubo at pumutol ng aming mga kabuhayan. Ang mga proyektong eko-turismo sa bayan ng Floridablanca, Mabalacat, Porac at Angeles city ay umaagaw rin sa aming mga lupang ninuno,” said Danan.
“Kaugnay nito, ipinatupad ni Aquino ang Oplan Bayanihan na walang ibang layunin kundi kami ay takutin at palayasin. Ang presensya ng mga militar ay karaniwang lumalabag sa aming mga karapatang pantao kagaya ng karanasan namin sa Porac na may military detachment dahil sa paglaban namin sa planong pagmimina ng Pisumpan Copper Mines, Inc. na pag-aari ng pamilyang Dizon, at Shuley Mines, Inc. na pag-aari ng mga Intsik. Ang probinsya ng Zambales ay militarisado dahil nagsisilbing gwardya ang militar sa pagmimina. Ang lugar ng Balog-balog dam din ay may detachment na nagbabantay sa proyekto,” he added.
The CLAA urged other cultural organizations to join their cause to defend the rights of Aetas in Central Luzon.
