Shanties along Duquit creek demolished

MABALACAT — Shanties erected by scavengers and garbage collectors along the Duquit creek here were demolished to give way for the clearing and rehabilitation of the water channel.
Mabalacat Municipal Administrator Rosano Paquia said scores of informal settlers voluntarily removed their temporary shelters and houses to allow heavy equipment, including two backhoes and four trucks, to enter the narrow creek, which has been used as an open dumpsite for several decades now.
The local government, through the directive of Mayor Marino Morales, is now undergoing a clearing operation following the notice of violation sent by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
In adherence to Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, the EMB directed the local government here and other cities and towns in Pampanga to close down immediately all open dumpsites.
Paquia said workers have to clear some 100 meters of the creek of piles of garbage dumped by residents and garbage collectors.
Waste hauled by heavy equipment is being dried up at the transfer station in the said village to be later taken to the Kalangitan sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac, according to Paquia.
“We cannot do this overnight. But we are continuously working to rehabilitate the creek,” Paquia said.
He added that the town will seek the assistance of other government agencies like the Department of Public Works and Highways for the total restoration of the waterway.
The number of informal settlers along the creek has soared to hundreds, aggravating the garbage problem in the area, he said. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
