Parents urged officials to regulate Internet shops

January 10, 2011

CANDABA – A group of parents want local officials to regulate Internet shops near school campuses in this town, citing the threat of online game “addiction”.
They complained that their children’s academic performance has been affected by frequent cutting of classes just to play online games.
“I give my child his daily allowance, believing that he is regularly attending his classes. To my surprise, I found out that my child spends more time playing online games in the Internet shop rather than attending his classes,” Marvic De Leon, mother of an elementary student here, lamented.
De Leon expressed apprehension that if Internet shops are not regulated, children might totally lose their interest in school.
She hopes that authorities will give their attention to this problem.
“Simple ang problema pero malaki ang epekto nito sa pag-aaral maging sa buhay ng aming mga anak (The problem is simple but it has a great effect on children’s studies, even on their lives),” De Leon said.
Aside from this, she also said the attitude and behavior of students have likewise been affected by their exposure to violence brought about by online games, citing that they become more aggressive and violent toward their playmates.
Gina Cao, mother of a second grader, said that while she understands that Internet café owners are just making a living, she still expects them to be responsible when it comes to their customers’ use of the Internet.
For Cao, this responsibility can be shown by Internet café owners not allowing students wearing uniforms to play online games, especially during class hours.
As this developed, a computer shop owner, who asked not to be identified, reacted favorably to the request of the concerned parents and promised to prevent students in uniform from entering his shop, particularly during school hours.
“Handa po natin sundin ang kahilingan ng mga magulang. (We’re ready to accommodate the parents’ request),” he said. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
