Sparkling wines fight it out on the international market (Nov 23, 2009)

Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site.  We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.

The age-old rivals of French sparkling wine, Spanish cava and Italian prosecco, look set to steal a march on champagne this year due to the economic crisis.

Both cava and champagne exported close to 140 million bottles in 2008, after a period of highly competitive sales : champagne recorded a 6.4% drop in export figures (source : CIVC), whereas cava exports were up by 9.6% (source : Cava Regulation Council) at nearly 139 million bottles as opposed to 141 million bottles of champagne. In 2007, champagne was ahead by 24 million bottles : in 2008, this gap has closed to just 2.3 million. The Spanish monitoring body OEMV predicts, however, that this pattern will culminate in significant slumps in sales for both appellations in 2009. In September, Nielsen published export sales figures for champagne for the first quarter of 2009, which were down overall by 20%.

Cava is champagne’s chief adversary on the international market, far ahead of prosecco, which exported 16 million bottles in 2007 (with a production of around 150 million bottles, as opposed to 340 million bottles of champagne). Nevertheless, prosecco has ambitious development plans which are bound to have an impact on export figures, since they aim to increase their production to 250 million bottles “before very long” (source : VITeff).

Any analysis of these trends remains incomplete without a comparison of commerical performance in terms of value rather than volume. These figures, which are not yet available, are worthy of close scrutiny in order to put champagne’s loss and cava’s gain in perspective.
