Most Asian Stocks Rise Before Bernanke Speech, U.S. Data
Most Asian stocks advanced as investors await a report on U.S. economic growth and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s speech on monetary policy this week.
Renesas Electronics Corp. (6723) surged 31 percent in Tokyo after the Nikkei newspaper reported that Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. will spend 100 billion yen ($1.3 billion) buying new shares of the chipmaker. LG Electronics (066570) Inc. jumped 4.8 percent in Seoul on optimism sales of its latest smartphone model will rise. Daikin Industries Ltd. sank 5.2 percent after a report the Japanese air-conditioner maker will buy Houston-based Goodman Global Inc.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose 0.2 percent to 119.42 as of 12:12 p.m. in Tokyo, having earlier lost 0.1 percent. Five shares rose for every three that fell. U.S. reports yesterday showed home prices increased for the first time since 2010, while consumer confidence fell. The Federal Reserve signaled last week it’s ready to take more steps to spur the economy and Bernanke may comment on the likelihood of further measures at an Aug. 31 speech at a meeting of central bankers in Wyoming.
“Bernanke’s probably going to hold fire here, while sending an encouraging message,” said Angus Gluskie, managing director at White Funds Management in Sydney who manages more than $350 million. “Realistically we’re probably going to see him say what he’s said over the last couple of months, which is simply that they will act, but only if conditions continue to deteriorate. That’s probably neutral for the market.”
Japan’s Nikkei 225 Stock Average (NKY) added 0.3 percent. South Korea’s Kospi Index gained 0.2 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was little changed, while China’s Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.3 percent. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 0.2 percent.
U.S. Futures
Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 0.1 percent today. The underlying gauge slid 0.1 percent yesterday.
Pacific Investment Management Co. Chief Executive Officer Mohamed El-Erian is among money managers speculating Bernanke probably won’t provide specific plans for further monetary action this week. El-Erian spoke yesterday on Bloomberg Television’s “In the Loop” with Betty Liu.
Spending by U.S. consumers is expected to have climbed in July by the most in five months, easing concern the biggest part of the economy is backsliding, economists said before a report on Aug. 30. Revised second-quarter gross domestic product to be released today by the Commerce Department may show the world’s biggest economy grew faster than initially estimated.
Biggest Advance
Information technology companies posted the biggest advance among the 10 industry groups in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index. (MXAP)
Renesas jumped 31 percent to 299 yen in Tokyo. New York- based KKR will spend 100 billion yen to take a controlling stake in the unprofitable chipmaker by the end of the year, the Nikkei reported, without saying where it got the information.
NEC Corp., a maker of computers and telecommunications equipment, advanced 3.7 percent to 111 yen. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. plans to buy patents from the Japanese company, Simon Hsing, a spokesman for the Taipei-based maker of Apple Inc.’s iPad, said by phone today, confirming comments made by Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou in Tokyo yesterday.
LG Electronics climbed 4.8 percent to 71,900 won in Seoul. The company’s latest Android smartphone Optimus G will help boost fourth-quarter sales, Kwon Sung Ryul, an analyst at Dongbu Securities Co., wrote in a report today.
Daikin, Evergrande
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 7.5 percent from this year’s high on Feb. 29 through yesterday. Stocks on Asia’s benchmark index were valued at 12.4 times estimated earnings on average, compared with 13.7 for the S&P 500 and 11.6 for the Stoxx Europe 600 Index, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Among stocks that fell, Daikin slipped 5.2 percent to 2,037 yen. The Japanese air-conditioner maker will buy Goodman Global for 300 billion yen, the Nikkei newspaper reported.
Evergrande Real Estate Group Ltd. dropped 3.1 percent to HK$3.09 in Hong Kong. China’s biggest developer by sales volume said first-half underlying profit fell 21 percent from a year earlier to 3.8 billion yuan ($598 million) as it sold fewer apartments as the government maintained property curbs.
Of the 506 companies in the Asia-Pacific index that have reported quarterly earnings since July 1, and for which Bloomberg has estimates, more than half failed to meet projections, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Billionaire Li’s Venture May Seek Singapore Land: Southeast Asia
illionaire Li Ka-shing’s Singapore property joint venture may seek more land in the city’s downtown to replicate its latest development that attracted global banks including Standard Chartered Plc and Macquarie Group Ltd.
The venture, made up of Li’s Cheung Kong Holdings Ltd. (1), Hongkong Land Holdings Ltd. (HKL) and Keppel Land Ltd. (KPLD), developed the Marina Bay Financial Centre for about S$4.5 billion ($3.6 billion), it said. The shareholders may be interested in projects close to the existing development, said Warren Bishop, chief executive officer of Raffles Quay Asset Management Pte, which is owned by and manages the venture’s Singapore properties.
“Given the right space, the developers will probably be keen to bid on some of those spaces,” Bishop said in an interview at its Marina Bay Financial Centre in Singapore yesterday. “The current perspective of the developers is to be central business district-based, if possible grow on this development here, so adjacent sites within this vicinity would be the most attractive.”
The development is part of Singapore’s effort to build a new downtown extension to boost its offering of office space and draw the world’s biggest financial services companies. The property has also attracted tenants including Barclays Plc (BARC) and Nomura Holdings Inc. as more global banks relocated regional and global functions to Singapore.
Singapore’s move to open up its financial sector after the 1997 Asian financial crisis helped boost demand for office space, especially in the business district, CBRE Group Inc. said.
Marina Bay
The area known as Marina Bay is a 360-hectare (890-acre) development area created from reclaiming land off the sea fronting the banking district, and now includes Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS)’s Marina Bay Sands casino-resort with a convention center that’s able to accommodate 45,000 delegates. Land reclamation played a prominent role in the growth of Singapore’s central business district, according to CBRE.
Monthly prime office rents averaged S$10.60 a square foot over the past five years, according to the property consulting company, lower than the peak of S$18.80 in mid-2008.
European companies account for 51 percent of the space occupied in the Marina Bay area, followed by 22 percent from Asia and 20 percent from North America, according to CBRE’s data.
Rents in Marina Bay have declined about 10 percent to S$10 a square foot from a year earlier, Moray Armstrong, executive director of office services at CBRE in Singapore, said in an interview. The European debt crisis may affect the office market over the next six to nine months, he said.
Riding Cycles
“The Marina Bay area will ride the cycles both up and down,” Armstrong said. “The key challenge right now is that the banks are out of the market and I think that could persist for a reasonable period of time.”
Raffles Quay Asset Management was set up to manage One Raffles Quay and the Marina Bay Financial Centre, which together account for 4.5 million square feet (418,000 square meters) of prime office and retail space in the new business district.
Bishop, who took over as CEO of Raffles Quay Asset Management in April and was previously based in Hong Kong, is focusing his efforts on leasing the remaining office space at Marina Bay Financial Centre and selling luxury apartment units at its Marina Bay Suites.
Marina Bay Financial Centre signed Clifford Capital, backed by Temasek Holdings Pte, and international law firm Clyde & Co. as new tenants, Bishop said. Raffles Quay Asset Management has leased more than 70 percent, or 890,000 square feet, of its third office tower at the development.
“People here are focusing on Asia for growth and Singapore is very much centered as the Southeast Asian regional financial, legal, commodities hub,” Bishop said. “Everyone is acknowledging the effects of the Eurozone, but the fact is Asia is still in growth, which is a key factor. Other economies in the region are not suffering like Europe and America are.”
