Group to create indie film on Betis woodcraft industry

GUAGUA — The Film Academy of Pampanga is set to create an indie film about the vanishing wood carving tradition in Guagua’s Betis District this September, featuring sights and attractions of Betis and its wood craft industry.
Art mover Ruston Banal told Sun.Star Pampanga that the goal of the film is to show to the world the ingenuity of Betis woodcarvers, the traditions that are passed on from generation to generation, and the dilemma of holding on to the tradition in the age of mechanical reproduction and modern technology.

Banal is one of those behind the Cinemalaya-winning Kapampangan film “Manenaya” (Waiting) directed by Richard Legaspi that has been picked to compete at the 18th International Short Film Festival in Drama in Greece.
He said the drama behind the hard work, perseverance and patience of a woodcarver would be highlighted in the film that will be based on the lives of prominent woodcarvers here.
Banal said writer Bor Ocampo will be drawing inspiration from the life of woodcarvers here with the likes of Maestro Willy Layug, who was a Presidential Medal of Merit Awardee for Ecclesiastical Art.
“We are making it as independent as possible and through the help of the local people and other prominent people from Betis who live outside of the province. Currently, a significant number of people has expressed support and funding for the project,” Banal said.
Banal said the project is open for contributions and donations. The film will star a handful of national theater actors and will also tap on local talents for the whole production.
Banal said they hope the planned film will make it to the international indie film scene like “Manenaya.”
“Manenaya” (Waiting) won the Jury Prize Award in the short film category of the recently concluded 8th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2012 awards last July. The film was shown last July 28 to 29 at the CCP and selected cinemas in Trinoma and Greenbelt, along with other films in the full-length new breed category, the director’s showcase category and the short films category.
Banal, a member of the film’s production, said the recognition highlights that Kapampangan films, shot and filmed with Kapampangan cultural background and influences, can actually catch the attention of movie critics.
“This recognition brings into the light the fact that Kapampangan filmmaking has a future in the national cinematic scene,” Banal told Sun.Star Pampanga.
The film “Manenaya,” co-produced and filmed by director Richard Soriano Legaspi, made it to the ranks of finalists in the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Indonesia last year.
