Gov’t, MILF reset peace talks to give way for Robredo’s funeral

THE Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have agreed to reset the formal peace talks in early September to give way on the state funeral for the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.
The MILF said on Saturday that the government peace panel led by Marvic Leonen sought for the postponement of the 31st formal exploratory talks originally scheduled on August 27-30 in
The government’s request was officially relayed to the MILF peace panel by Dato Tengku Abd’ Ghaafar bin Mohamed, the Malaysian facilitator, on Friday, the rebel group said.
“Without the slightest hesitation, the MILF agreed for the postponement, saying the meeting in KL can wait but the state funeral (for Robredo) will only take once,” it said.
Robredo died in a plane crash off Masbate province last week. Two pilots were also killed while the Cabinet official’s security aid survived the accident.
His remains have been laid in state at the Kalayaan Hall of the Malacanang Palace. They were flown to Manila on Friday and will be returned to Naga City, Camarines Sur on Sunday.
President Benigno Aquino III will lead the state funeral on Tuesday in Naga City before the late secretary will be laid to rest.
The MILF said that no fixed dates have been set for the next round of negotiation, although both parties have agreed in principle to have it on the first week of September.
In the spirit of the peace process, Mohagher Iqbal, chair of the MILF peace panel, said the MILF had extended an official condolence to the family and to the Aquino administration for Robredo’s demise.
“The death of Robredo is not only a loss to his family, relatives and to the Aquino administration but also to the peace-making in Mindanao,” he said.
He described Robredo as a strong supporter for the peaceful settlement of the Moro Question and the armed conflict in Mindanao.
In the September talks, the government and the MILF are set to discuss the transition mechanism for the new political entity, power-sharing, wealth-sharing and normalization, among others.
In the previous talks, the two parties also created two technical working groups – one for power-sharing and the other for wealth-sharing. (SDR/Sunnex)
