What mums really want for Mother’s Day
A family gathering
Mothering Sunday was originally a day-off from Lent, when servants were allowed to travel home to see their mums, and have a slap-up dinner together. Traditional presents were flowers and cakes – and you won’t go too far wrong if you stick to tradition. What mum doesn’t love having the family all around one table, with cake and flowers thrown in? But mum’s not making the feast, or doing the washing up – oh no. Book her favourite restaurant or pub, or make the meal yourself – and make sure you wash up afterwards.
Breakfast in bed
Again, a traditional but excellent choice. Try making Jamie Oliver’s ridiculously easy American-style pancakes (1 cup each of flour and milk, plus one large egg: www.jamieoliver.com/recipes) with fruit and maple syrup, add flowers and a pot of tea, and Bob’s your auntie’s live-in lover. Follow up with a family walk – or take the kids off yourself to let her really enjoy that extended lie-in.
Time to herself
This is one thing we mums often crave more than anything, so organise her some proper ‘me time’ by booking her a spa day or some beauty treatments. Halcyon in Twyford offers lots of pampering treatments, contact them on 0118 934 0355, www.halcyon-brw.co.uk Or indulge her hobby (yoga/writing/crafts/cookery) with a weekend course. If she doesn’t get to see her closest friends enough, maybe you could secretly liaise with them and organise a weekend away? You’ll be rolling in Brownie points after any of these.
Time with you, alone
Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and the grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days all round.
Personalised works of art
If home is where your woman’s heart is, then a few personal touches to beautify it won’t go far wrong. Book a photographic session for the whole family or find a local service that will create something unique. Try A Few Words, who will produce personalised prints using words that are special to you. What woman could resist a framed print of her favourite song lyric or film quote as a romantic gesture?
Something really unique
With a little planning ahead, you and the kids can present mum with a truly unique and handmade creation. Take your children’s fingerprints or hand or foot casts, and have them made into pictures, keepsakes or jewellery. Treasure The Memories, will hand carve them into beautiful slate or try The Little Print Co or The Dinky Fingerprint Co, who both produce personalised gifts and jewellery that any mother would love.

Downton Abbey fans
A new book written by the Countess of Carnarvon could prove the ideal gift for all fans of the award-winning TV series. Or how about buying your mum tickets to visit the real ‘Downton Abbey’ – it’s nearer than you might think?
Highclere Castle, situated in 1000 acres of parkland near Newbury, is one of the country’s most beautiful Victorian houses. Home to the Carnarvon family, Highclere is probably best known as the setting for the popular BBC series Downton Abbey. Indeed writer Julian Fellowes had Highclere in mind when he penned Downton and much of the history of the house and the Carnarvon family has found its way onto the screen.
A new book, Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey, tells this remarkable true story, one that is even more fascinating than fiction.
In 1894, Lady Almina, the nineteen year old illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild, married into the Carnarvon family bringing an enormous fortune with her.
Lonely and miserable at first, she gradually won over society and her husband with her wit, brave spirit and fabulous dresses.
When the First World War came, life at Highclere changed forever and they lost many of the men whose families had worked there for generations. Lady Almina persuaded her husband to allow her to turn Highclere into a hospital for wounded soldiers and personally saw that they received the highest standard of care.
She also funded and supported her husband the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s expeditions to Egypt. In 1922 he famously discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen. An exhibition at Highclere celebrates his achievements.
Highclere Castle, grounds and Egyptian exhibition will be open to the public on 1-15 April, selected dates in May and June and on Sunday-Thursdays from 1 July-13 September.
