Aquino no regrets in meeting with Corona: Palace

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III has no regrets in meeting with impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona shortly after he assumed office in 2010, Malacanang said Friday.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte made the reaction as Corona disclosed the private meeting days before the defense team’s turn to present evidence and witnesses at the Senate impeachment court.
“I was part of that meeting with the President yesterday when we discussed this particular issue and I did not get that sense that the President had any regrets because the President was very categorical in saying that ‘it was incumbent upon me to ensure that we had a good working relationship given that the four pillars of the reform agenda include judicial reform. And the Chief Justice being the head of the judiciary is a necessary partner in implementing that judicial reform,'” Valte said in a news briefing.
Corona has revealed that Aquino sought a meeting with him sometime in June or July 2010, when they talked about the creation of the Truth Commission.
But Malacañang denied that the issue was discussed, saying the President merely talked on the judicial reform.
Valte also said the President did not divulge to the public his meeting with Corona because he did not want to put color on it.
“It’s not the President’s habit to trumpet everything that he does…that are just not announced because the President believed that such setting would be more constructive, instead of putting color or given attention. Not everything that the President does needs to be trotted out,” she said.
She added the President even described the ending of the meeting a “very pleasant.”
Valte also said that it was not unusual for the heads of the different branches of government to talk with each other.
“It’s not unusual for heads of the separate and co-equal branches of government to have discussions like this particular one,” she said.
Valte also said that Corona, who claimed to have threats on his life, could augment his security if he sees fit.
“We have no problem and we do not think that anybody would begrudge the Chief Justice if he wants to add to his security. And that is perfectly within his right to do so,” she said.
