7 hurt in mall construction mishap

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Seven workers, mostly electricians, including two engineers, were injured when a vertical beam being filled with concrete collapsed Thursday at the ongoing construction site of SM City San Fernando.
The beam, about 10 meters long, fell five floors down to the construction barracks of the workers at the western side of the building while on lunch break at about 12:15 p.m.
Fire Chief Inspector Myra Feliciano of the San Fernando Rescue Team said Brian Arceo from Guagua; Norbie Alcantara, 21; and Rodoflo Garcia, 40, all from the City of San Fernando, were seriously injured and were taken to the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital.
Joven Badia, John Palma, and Jonnie Ronquillo and Jaime Nicdao sustained minor injuries and remained at the site.
Nicdao told Sun.Star Pampanga that they were resting, with Arceo playing chess with a fellow worker, when they heard the sound of sand pouring down their barracks.
“Bigla na lamang pong bumuhos ang semento sa barracks namin at natabunan si Brian. Mabilis po namin siyang hinukay at inilabas. Buti na lamang po at walang kasamang bakal iyung bumagsak sa amin, kung hindi, marami ang namatay at malubhang nasugatan (The sand buried Brian but he was immediately rescued. Good thing there was no steel or else most of us will be injured),” he said.
Work was suspended for about 45 minutes, with other workers rushing out of the building, Feliciano said.
But contractor RC Ramos said that work resumed at 1 p.m. since damage was minor.
Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) communications officer Jerry Borja, who rushed to the scene with Regional Director Raymundo Agravante, said construction work “may be suspended” once their investigation is complete, just like when the labor department issued a cease and desist order to Trass Construction Company from further constructing the buildings of North Haven Pharmaceuticals at Clark Freeport, where four workers died when a wall collapsed.
SM vice president for publicity Millie Dizon said the giant mall chain practices good safety standards at work.
“We apologize for the unfortunate incident and wish to assure the public that it was isolated and we practice good safety standards in our construction work,” Dizon said.
The SM City San Fernando building, based on earlier interviews with SM officials, is designed with seven floors–the 5th, 6th and 7th allocated for parking–and is supposed to open mid-May this year.
