Protests against oil price hikes set this week

YOUTH groups and militant jeepney drivers and operators will launch a series of mass protests against the spiraling oil prices and school fees this week.
According to Anakbayan national chairperson Vencer Crisostomo, the protests will kick-off on Tuesday in different campuses and communities, and a march to Mendiola Bridge in Manila near Malacañang.
Saying no to a transport holiday just yet, the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) will hold a separate noise barrage on Wednesday outside the Isetann department store in Cubao, Quezon City to call anew for the junking of the Oil Deregulation Law.
The protest will coincide with an announcement from Malacañang on the relief package for the transport sector, which earlier snubbed a Palace-initiated dialogue on the issue of escalating pump prices.
Malacañang had said that the government will implement a second round of fuel subsidies for jeepney drivers under the Pantawid Pasada Program in light of calls by some transport groups to hike fares.
Reached for comment, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad however declined to go into the specifics of the revived fuel subsidy.
Since the law took effect in 1996, Anakbayan observed that the rate of increase for diesel alone, which is mostly used by jeepney drivers, is more than 600 percent – from P7 up to P45 per liter in 2010.
“The government is posturing as if it is against ‘abuse’ and ‘corruption,’ but we must ask them, what about the ‘abuse’ and ‘corruption’ of the big oil companies?” Crisostomo said.
Petroleum products have risen four times in the past three weeks.
Since January, the three biggest oil companies have increased the price of diesel by P2.70 per liter, regular gasoline by P2.60 per liter, unleaded gasoline by P2.20 per liter and kerosene by P2.50 per liter.
This developed after Iran, suspected of developing atomic weapons by the United States, threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passageway for ships carrying petroleum from major oil-exporting countries in the Arabian Peninsula.
The Philippines imports roughly 95 percent of its oil needs, according to a report last year by the US Agency for International Development’s Regional Development Mission for Asia.
In other developments, Crisostomo said that tuition hikes are also impending as the government slashed funds for state universities last year.
He said that the government’s guidelines on tuition increases allow “obscene” tuition rates and “redundant” fees.
“Malacañang promised to release a new tuition policy addressing bogus fees and unabated tuition hikes. However, just like everything else the government has promised,” he said.
The deadline for consultations on tuition increases is set on February as Anakbayan projects around 400 schools to increase tuition by as much as 15 percent once the guidelines take effect. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
