Palace admits NAIA 1 should be improved

MALACANANG on Wednesday agreed that the Philippine airport named after the current president’s father needs rehabilitation after it was named in a website as the world’s worst.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the government can only accept criticisms for now against the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 1 but assured that improvements and other proposals such as the transfer to Clark, Pampanga are being studied.
“We have to take into consideration the fact that NAIA 1 has been around for 30 years…There is only so much you can do in the sense of rehabilitation, it can only go so far,” Valte said.
In website the Guide to Sleeping to Airports, NAIA terminal 1 was tagged as the worst airport in the world this year, citing poor facilities, bribery, and security concerns.
Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Jose Angel Honrado said the tag was unfair noting that airports like in war-torn areas could be worse. Honrado said much has been done to improve the airport.
“You know that’s one of the lists that we’d rather not be on top of but let me repeat what Secretary Roxas has said, in this case the client is always right, the customer is always right,” said Valte.
“Secretary Roxas said they are studying a proposal to move the airport out to Clark but that is something that has to be looked at very thoroughly,” she added.
Malacañang earlier said that there is merit in the proposal to transfer Naia to Clark.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Roxas is organized and detailed in doing a project and he will ensure that all things are ironed out before beginning a program.
Roxas earlier said that the government could raise up to $2.5 billion if the 440-hectare Naia is privatized. This would pave the way for the airport’s transfer to Clark.
“You don’t just make the decision to move an airport somewhere without considering the mode of transportation going there. And in other countries you’ve seen airports that are not in the city but they do have mass transportation systems to make access to the airport easier. So that is something that needs a very, very thorough study,” Valte said.
While the transfer of Naia to Clark needs comprehensive study, Valte said airport officials are doing immediate solutions to fix common problems in airports.
“One complain that NAIA has been receiving is the lavatories. They complained about cleanliness and lack of water. General Honrado is doing something to fix that situation. However, when it comes to water problem, they have asked for time because the pipes under lavatories are all they have to be replaced so that will take some work. We are doing what we can to rehabilitate the airport as far as possible,” she said. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
