Aquino administration gets confidence boost in new survey

PUBLIC perception seems to be on the side of President Benigno Aquino III and his Cabinet after majority of Filipinos gave a passing mark on the administration’s performance, a new survey of independent pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.
Polled from September 4 to 7, the third quarter survey indicated that 68 percent of the 1,200 respondents were satisfied with the government’s work; 19 percent said they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied while only 12 percent thought otherwise.
This brings the administration’s net satisfaction rating to +56 or “very good” from “good” +45 and +46 in the first two quarters of the year.
SWS classified net scores of +70 and above as “excellent,” +50 to +69 “very good,” +30 to +49 “good,” +10 to +29 “moderate,” +9 to -9 “neutral,” -10 to -29 “poor,” -30 to -49 “bad,” -50 to -69 “very bad,” and -70 and below “execrable.”
Sought for comment, Presidential Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ricky Carandang said the rebound in the administration’s satisfaction scores inspired them to do better.
“We’re happy that the public seems to appreciate what the administration is doing and we will continue to work to keep the public’s trust,” he said.
Prior to this survey, President Aquino scored a similar +56 or “very good” rating in September, up 10 percentage points from the previous quarter.
“This means that the President and his men are doing the right thing,”
Ramon Casiple, executive director of the Institute for Political and Economic Reform (Iper), said in a text message.
Of the 16 issues rated by the public, the administration came up “very good” in improving the quality of children’s education (+56) and helping the poor (+50).
The Cabinet, meanwhile, received “good” ratings in seven issues: foreign relations (+44), promoting welfare of overseas Filipino workers (+41), telling the truth (+37), and fighting terrorism (+34), reconciliation with Muslim rebels (+34), reconciliation with communist rebels (+33), and ensuring an efficient transportation system (+33).
Conspicuously, respondents gave a “poor” mark on the government’s handling of the Maguindanao massacre case, which involves the killing of 57 civilians in the hinterlands of Ampatuan town in November 23, 2009.
Across geographical areas, the administration’s net satisfaction remained “very good” in Mindanao (+63 from +57), “good” in Metro Manila (down to +44 from +48), and jumped to “very good” from “good” in the Visayas (+51 from +47) and in “Balance Luzon” (+59 from +37).
All socioeconomic classes likewise approved of the government’s performance after improving to “very good” from “good” for economic classes ABC (+62 from +45), D (+57 from +48) and E (+52 from +36).
