Frog festival to be launched anew Monday

CITY OF SAN FERNAND — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez will formally launch Monday the Frog Festival 2011 or “Pyestang Tugak,” an annual event celebrating the Kapampangan tradition of catching and cooking the edible amphibian species.
The Lundag Tugak and Frog Race will be held on October 12, 8 a.m. at the Abad Santos Stree.
The actual and traditional way of Kapampangans in catching frogs, the Paduasan and Kuluban Tugak, will follow on October 13, 6 a.m. at the St. Jude Oval, St. Jude Village.
Kapampangans will prove and show their talent in singing on October 14, 2 p.m. for the Frog Chorale Competition and Fiesta Kapampangan at Robinson’s Starmills Pampanga.
Representatives of different schools from elementary, high school and college levels will showcase their dancing prowess to compete in Pyestang Tugak Grand Street Dance Competition on October 15, 9 a.m. at the Event Center in Robinson’s Starmills Pampanga. The event will also feature the Frog Mascot Costume Competition, where creativeness and resourcefulness of the contestants will be tested.
For decades, catching frogs has been a tradition for Kapampangans.
The festival started in 2003 and was geared at conservingand promoting the unique tradition of Kapampangans. This annual celebration’s main goal is to further awareness, appreciation and understanding of the tradition with various activities.
During the early times, children would play and catch frogs when the rains come while elders were busy planting and harvesting in the rice fields. This simple game eventually developed into a specialized method and skill. This unique way of catching frogs is called “paduasan”, while the bamboo rod use to catch frogs is called “paduas”.
Famous for their culinary prowess, Kapampangans discovered that these can be cooked and turned into a special dish.
The Pyestang Tugak is just one of the many festive and important events being celebrated at the City of San Fernando. In this way, Kapampangan culture and tradition will continue to flourish and will have the potential to be known not only in the local setting but also in the international scene.
This year’s event is headed by Councilor Noel Tulabut, City Council’s committee on tourism chairperson.
