27% of blood donations positive of HIV
August 1, 2011
TWENTY-SEVEN percent of donated blood units for the month of June were confirmed by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) to be positive of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a report said Sunday.
“For June 2011, out of the 118 blood units referred for HIV confirmation, 32 units were positive for HIV, 4 units had indeterminate results and 82 were negative for HIV,” said the report.
HIV is a lentivirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS), a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk, the Department of Health said in its website at www.doh.gov.ph.
The figure is the highest number that tested positive in the first half of 2011.
It is also the highest figure recorded in a month since January 2008.
The DOH–National Epidemiology Center (NEC) though qualified that having 32 units positive with HIV does not necessarily mean that there were 32 people who have given blood donations.
“One blood donor can donate more than one blood unit,” said the monthly report of the Philippine HIV & Aids Registry.
The Philippine HIV & Aids Registry is the official record of the total number of laboratory-confirmed HIV positive individuals, Aids cases and deaths, and HIV positive blood units in the Philippines.
DOH–National Aids/Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention and Control Program manager Dr. Gerard Belimac had also issued an earlier appeal for more responsible blood donations.
“Our main message to the public is that if they were exposed to risky behaviors, please avoid donating blood because you could be donating your blood to your loved ones, to your friends,” said Belimac in an earlier interview.
From January to April 2011, 60 blood units were confirmed to be positive for HIV by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
The report further stated that as of April 2011, there are 171 new HIV Ab sero-positive individuals. Most of the cases were males and are from the National Capital Region (NCR).
The reported mode of transmission was sexual contact and re-using needles among injecting drug users.
Males having sex with other Males were the predominant type of sexual transmission.
Most of the cases were still asymptomatic at the time of reporting, the report added.
Of the 171 HIV positive cases, three were reported as Aids cases. All were males. All acquired the infection through homosexual contact.
From 1984 to 2011, there were 867 Aids cases reported, 71 percent or 619 were males. Of the AIDS cases, there were 324 or 37 percent deaths during the reported period.
Sexual contact was the most common mode of HIV transmission, accounting for 93 percent or 806 of all Aids cases. More than half of sexual transmission was through heterosexual contact, followed by homosexual contact then bisexual contact.
Other modes of transmission include: mother-to-child, blood transfusion, injecting drug use, and needle prick injuries.(AMN/Sunnex)
