Parents urged to be responsible for kids’ nutrition

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda on Friday called on parents to be responsible for the upbringing of their children in order to assure them of proper and necessary nutrition.
This was Pineda’s message to 500 parents and children during Friday’s Nutrition Month activity with the theme “Isulong ang Breastfeeding: Tama, Sapat at Eksklusibo,” at the Benigno Aquino Hall attended by Provincial Board members and health officials of the province.
Pineda called on the parents to ensure proper breastfeeding of their children, coupled with proper attention and emotional support. She said it is not enough to only feed the children.
“Raising children is a very difficult task. One must be ready to become a parent and have the resources to bring up the children as productive members of the community,” Pineda said.
According to Pineda, right after birth, the baby must be breastfed by the mother. No matter how scanty the breast milk may be at first, it is already enough for the baby. Constant sucking will stimulate the production of more milk.
The mother’s milk is all that the baby needs in the first six months of his or her life, Pineda said, adding that the baby does not even need water or vitamins.
“For mothers who have to return to work after their maternity leave¸ they may collect their breast milk in a clean container. At room temperature, the breast milk will last up to several hours. However, if refrigerated, it will last longer,” Pineda said.
Pineda also said that parents have the responsibility to maintain stable jobs to be able to support the educational and other needs of the children.
“People should always consider that parenting is something that one decides to take with the proper emotional and financial support. Most parents fail in bringing up their children well because they lack the necessary resources,” Pineda said.
She said indigent parents should not just depend on government for the development and sustenance of their children.
During the event, the attendees were also given food supplements, food items and medical attention from volunteer doctors. Children with hydrocephalus and heart problems were also given proper attention and been forwarded to government hospitals for proper attention, said the governor.
