Although Crémant de Loire can be made anywhere in the Anjou-Saumur and Touraine region, the rules governing production are more stringent than for other sparkling wines. All grapes must be hand harvested, and the minimum aging period is longer than for other Loire Valley sparkling wines (one year, as opposed to nine months for Saumur Brut). And while a wide range of varietals may be used, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and local specialties such as Pineau d’Aunis and Grolleau, the wines are primarily made from Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
