About the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Southern Rhone, France

Chateauneuf du Pape is a famous French wine that takes its name from the Pope’s residence in the 14th century. The name literally means “Pope’s New Castle”. The wines were not well received until the early 20th century, when changes in quality regulations and replantings after the phylloxera devastation resulted in a much better type of wine.

Most Chateauneuf du Pape wines are red, although there are some whites as well. The main grape is grenache, and mourvedre and syrah are added. There are a few other grape types allowed in the blend as well.

There are around 7,500 acres in this region. Chateauneuf du Pape is great for low carb dieters, because the wine goes well with the staples of that diet – cheese, eggs, mushrooms and chicken.
