‘Falcon’ merges with LPA, accelerates

Thursday, June 23, 2011
MANILA — Weather forecasters on Thursday said Tropical Storm “Falcon” maintained its strength but slightly accelerated northwestward after it merged with a low pressure area (LPA) that was spotted near Catanduanes province.

Public storm signal number 1 is still up in Isabela, Cagayan, Calayan, Batanes Group of Islands and the Babuyan Group of Island.

Several schools in the capital, particularly Manila, Malabon and Valenzuela, have announced a suspension of classes at all levels due to heavy rains and flooding.

Classes at all levels were also suspended in Albay after it experienced cloudy skies and rain showers on Thursday.

The Air Transportation Office reported on Thursday that 30 international flights and 26 domestic flights have been cancelled due to the weather disturbance.

These domestic trips include that of Cebu Pacific and AirPhil Express going to Legazpi City, Caticlan, Naga, Surigao, and Tuguegarao City.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, Falcon (international codename: Meari) was 390 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It was moving at 19 kph.

The LPA was estimated at 550 kilometers northeast of Virac, Catanduanes.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Falcon was expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and would bring rains over central and southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Pagasa said residents in low-lying and mountainous area should watch out for flashfloods and landslides.

“The storm will soon be categorized as typhoon as it prepares to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday afternoon,” acting weather division chief Robert Sawi told Sun.Star.

A typhoon carries winds of at least 115 kilometers per hour near the center as weather agencies in China, Korea, United States, and Taiwan expect Falcon to join this category on Friday.

Pagasa acting Administrator Nathaniel T. Servando early Thursday said all dams, particularly Angat Dam in Bulacan, are at normal elevations and still far from the spilling levels.

He said Magat Dam, which is in the Isabela–Cagayan area, is still 10 meters more before it reaches its spilling level as of Thursday morning, but it could be filled with rainwater when Falcon nears the area.

“Pagasa is closely watching La Mesa Dam (in Novaliches) since it is 0.53 meters to its spilling level. It has no gate so when it is filled up, the water would just spill out,” Servando said.

Falcon is expected to be 210 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes by Friday evening, and 550 kilometers north northeast of Basco, Batanes or at 300 kilometers west southwest of Okinawa Japan on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the search is on for seven fishermen on board three separate vessels who reportedly went missing while braving the strong winds and waves generated by Falcon in Catanduanes.

More than 200 ship passengers, in the meantime, were stranded in the ports of Tabaco and Pio Duran in Albay after the Philippine Coast Guard suspended their trips.

Pagasa said strong to gale force wind is expected to affect the western seaboards of Luzon and Visayas and eastern seaboard of the country.

The strong winds are capable of generating waves between 3.7 and 5.5 meters in height.

Pagasa advised fishing boats and other small sea crafts not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves. (Virgil Lopez/PNA/Sunnex)
