Pinatubo banquet a ‘salo-salo’ for unity

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Retired banker Willie Rivera, chair of the 20th Mt. Pinatubo Memorial Day thanksgiving banquet, said on Saturday that the gathering is more than just an appreciation dinner for those who helped — and survived — the havoc of the volcano two decades ago.
The thanksgiving banquet is slated on June 15, the day Pinatubo spewed ashes all over the province, with some reaching as far as Vietnam. Four years later, lahar from the “volcano in the backyard” devastated much of the province.
It was the concerted efforts of the private sector, concerned citizens and government that finally gave way for Kapampangans to rise from devastation.
The banquet at Heroes Hall culminates the commemoration of the Pinatubo eruption, and will be preceded by an inter-faith service led by Fr. Resty Lumanlan.
“It’s more than a banquet of thanksgiving. It’s a ‘salo-salo’ for unity celebrating our efforts in coming together to save Pampanga. It is a thanksgiving to God and the resiliency and determined spirits of Kapampangans to rise over devastation,” Rivera told Sun.Star Pampanga before the memorial fun run Saturday at City Hall.
Rivera said that over 800 guests are expected to attend the banquet, with Sen. Francis Pangilinan gracing the affair.
