Divorce bill a worse threat to family: Church official

AN OFFICIAL of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Sunday said the divorce bill is worse than the reproductive health (RH) bill.
CBCP Legal Counsel Jo Imbong said the proposed bill introducing divorce in the Philippines provides a worse threat to family than what is being posed by the RH bill.
“If we compare divorce bill and RH bill, divorce directly destroys what is good and that is the marriage bond, while the RH bill does the same but indirectly,” said Imbong.
The CBCP has been the staunchest opponent of the RH bill, describing it as being an anti-life measure since it promotes the use of artificial contraceptives as a family planning method.
More recently, the bishops have also assailed the push for the divorce bill in the House of Representatives.
For his part, CBCP Secretary General Msgr. Juanito Figura opined that the parallel push for the RH and the divorce bills do not complement one another.
“The idea of entertaining the divorce bill, at this point, is, in itself, inconsistent with what the RH bill is even trying to propose. The RH bill is a remedy to a growing population,” said the Church official in a recent press briefing.
He added that, “from a practical point of view, with the divorce law, two people will be separated, two people will get married again and these people will have new families. That adds to the population.”
Currently, the consolidated RH bill (House Bill 4244) is being deliberated at the House plenary floor, while the divorce bill (House Bill 1799) is still being discussed at the House Committee on Revision of Laws.
Puerto Princesa Bishop Pedro Arigo, meanwhile, said lawmakers should refrain from holding hearings and deliberations on the divorce bill, adding it is just a waste of time and money.
In an article posted on the CBCP website, Arigo said there are more other important issues to address than hearing the measure.
He added that the introduction of the divorce bill might be part of the government’s psychological strategy against the Catholic Church because of the latter’s opposition on the measure.
Other prelates who are against the bill were Butuan Bishop Juan De Dios Pueblos and Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles.
For Pueblos, the divorce measure is leading toward immorality in a society, which begins at home.
Arguelles called on Filipinos not to follow the bad examples of ‘de-Christianizing’ countries.
