An Exceptional Bottle of La Tâche Burgundy from Romanée-Conti
1. The Producer
One of the greatest wine producers in the Burgundy region, founded in 1880. Romanée-Conti was one of the first Domaines to bottle their own wine, but as was traditional in Burgundy, they still sold a large proportion to the trade, particularly to Joseph Drouhin.
2. The Origin
An estate in Burgundy which could easily be described as one of the world’s greatest wine producers. Fought over in a bidding war in 1760, the Domaine was the object of desire for both Madame de Pompadour and her bitter enemy Louis Francois 1er de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. Needless to say, the latter was the higher bidder and named the estate after himself. During the revolution the land was seized and auctioned off. At the turn of the century 40 hectares of the vineyards were owned by one of Napoleon’s Generals, Liger-Belair, who eventually had to sell part of the property and lost La Tâche to the domaine in 1933.
3. La Tâche
A fantastic vineyard of 6.06 hectares belonging to the world-famous Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC).
4. The Name
This appellation was acquired in 1936 after court proceedings to settle the confusion of reuniting La Tâche and Les Gaudichots vineyards following Liger-Belair’s sale in 1933.
5. The Heritage
A predecessor of the de Villaine family who currently own the property. Duvault-Blochet acquired Romanée Conti in 1869.
6. The Owners
Petits Fils de J.M. Duvault Blochet. The names of Edmond de Villaine and Jacques Chambon, who bought the vines from the Domaine Liger-Belair in 1933, descents of J.M. Duvault Blochet.
7. Seuls propriétaires
Indicates that de Villaine & Chambon are the sole owners of the vineyard, which was not the case before 1933 as we see above. Now owned by the Villaine and Leroy families.
8. The Vintage
1940 – A year in which the wine was rich and complex with a silky texture and unsurpassable finesse.
