6 Luzon areas under storm signals

MANILA (Updated 6:47 a.m.) — The country’s weather agency has placed six areas in northern Luzon under public storm warning signals as Tropical Storm Nando (international name: Kong-Rey) intensifies and continues to move north northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph).

Nando contains maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near its center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) placed the province of Batanes under storm signal number 2, while the provinces of Cagayan, Apayao, and Isabela, including the Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, were under storm signal number 1.

Pagasa said areas under storm signal number 2 will experience winds up 61-100 kph within the next 24 hours. Areas placed under storm signal number 1 should expect 45-60 kph winds within the next 36 hours.

At storm signal number 2, classes from preschool to highschool are automatically suspended. Meanwhile, at signal number 1, the Department of Education said only the classes of preschool and kindergarten are cancelled.

As of the 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nando was located 200 kilometers (km) east of Aparri, Cagayan.

Pagasa said, Nando should be 11 km Northeast of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning. By Thursday, it should be 390 km North of Basco, Batanes. The tropical storm is expected to be at 250 km Northeast of Taiwan by Friday morning.

The tropical storm is expected to bring 10-25 millimeter per hour amount of rainfall within its 400 km diameter.

Nando, the 14th tropical cyclone in the country this year, is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring light to moderate with at times heavy rain and thunderstorms over the rest of Luzon.

Authorities said sea travel is risky over the eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon.

“Batanes group of islands will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas. The provinces of Isabela, Apayao and Cagayan including Babuyan and Calayan group of islands will have rain with gusty winds with moderate to rough seas,” said Pagasa in its 5:00 a.m. advisory Tuesday.

Meanwhile, five flights were cancelled Monday due to the tropical storm, according the Transportation and Communications department.
