4 Davao schools ‘operating sans permit’

DAVAO CITY — The Department of Education (DepEd) in Davao Region said four schools in this city are operating without permits.
In an interview over dxAB Radyo Patrol 1296 Davao on Wednesday, DepEd regional private schools supervisor Alma Cifra named one of the unaccredited schools as the Good Shepherd School in Toril.

Cifra, however, refused to name the three others, but said one is in District 1, another in District 3 while the other is in District 2.
She said their office is also monitoring several other schools that have been reported to be operating without the DepEd permit.
She said that based on their latest data, there are only 221 accredited high school and elementary schools in this city.
A copy of the master list of private schools of the DepEd’s Basic Education Information System, obtained by Sun.Star Davao, showed that there are 215 registered schools for the school year 2011-2012.
Cifra also reacted to parents’ complaints against Good Shepherd School aired over dxAb program.
A concerned parent expressed dismay that her children had to go back to Grades 3 and 2 when they should already be in Grades 5 and 4, respectively.
Magsaysay Elementary School did not credit the units earned at Good Shepherd in Toril because it was not DepEd-accredited. It has caused trauma for the children, the parent added.
Based on the radio report, the school has been operating for 12 years now.
Cifra said all accredited schools know the rules and requirements that they should comply with.
“Sa akong naabtan, naningkamot ang office to reach out to them kay ang mga bata ang apektado ani (We are trying to reach out to them because the students are the most affected in this kind of situation),” she said.
Cifra urged the parents to inquire directly from the DepEd or from principals in public schools to check the list of accredited schools.
She admitted that she was once almost duped when she planned to enroll her child in a private school.
