1st open heart surgery in Central Luzon performed

ANGELES CITY — The Angeles University Foundation Medical Center (AUFMC) Cardiovascular Institute successfully performed the first open heart surgery in Central Luzon last May 2.

AUFMC president and chief executive officer Gabriel Martin L. Angeles said Tuesday that with the efforts of the AUFMC officials, the medical team and generous benefactors, the surgery was performed on a 23-year-old male indigent patient suffering from rheumatic heart disease.

The patient, who is a food service worker, waited for over a year for his heart valve replacement, said Angeles.

Angeles praised the medical team, headed by Dr. Rector Villajuan and assisted by Dr. Anthony Manlulu, for the successful operation.

The hospital head also cited Dr. Roabini Mayor and Dr. Romy Alvarez, who provided the cardiac anesthesia.

Present during the operation were cardiologists Dr. Edgardo Timbol and Dr. Gabriel Jocson III.

The cardiovascular team included perfusionists Charles Andino, Aldrin de la Cruz and Rodel Vintero; and nurses Alex Garcia, Jesus Baco, Alex Lagman, Marites Coronel, Aires Tiongson, Abigail Dimacali, Joy Madranio, Jomar Manalac and Venancio Flores.

The AUFMC is set to inaugurate the AUFMC Cardiovascular Institute with Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona and PhilHealth Chief Rey B. Aquino on May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Grand Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Resort-Clark.

In partnership with the HB Calleja National Heart Institutes, the AUFMC established its Cardiovascular Institute, the first in Central and Northern Luzon.

The center is equipped with technology that allows the conduct of major cardiac procedures, such as coronary angiography and angioplasty, bypass surgery, pacemaker insertions and other complicated cardiac procedures. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
